Las experiencias de plantaciones compuestas por mezcla de especies en zonas tropicales son aún escasas, especialmente en lo referente a cuáles y cuántas especies combinar, el espaciamiento original, y el manejo forestal más apropiado que permita en forma equilibrada combinar objetivos de producir madera para aserrío y a la vez fijación de carbono. En el estudio se incluyeron un total de 18 sistemas de plantaciones en diferentes mezclas de especies establecidos por Reforest The Tropics Inc. (RTT). La información generada por RTT y analizada a través del presente estudio puede considerarse como pionera en plantaciones mixtas para la producción de madera y la fijación de carbono en el trópico de América Latina y debería servir como base para hacer las modificaciones necesarias con el fin de comprobar el potencial de producción de estos sistemas en futuras plantaciones comerciales. The existing experiences in plantations composed by a mixture of species in tropical zones are scarce, especially, with respect to which and how many species are combined, the original distance, and the most appropriate forest management allowing, in a balanced form, the combination of objectives to produce wood for mills and carbon fixation simultaneously. This study included a total of 18 systems of plantations in different mixtures from species established by Reforest The Tropics Inc. (RTT). The information generated by RTT and analyzed through the present study can be considered as pioneer in mixed plantations for the production of wood and carbon fixation in the Tropics of Latin America, and it would serve as the bases to make the necessary modifications with the purpose of verifying the potential of production of these systems in future commercial plantations.
