This papers is organized as follows a brief accounting of the negotiations that led to MERCOSUR is presented, together with some basic quantitative data and with a discussion of the future prospects for the integration. In section 3 an stylized description of the Brazilian and Argentine economics is presented. Section 4 contains a summary of GTAP for the reader unfamiliar with the model, Section 5 discusses the main results and sectio 6 concludes the paper. (MV)
