Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo, caracterizar el efecto del huracán Mitch, sobre la dinámica de los bosques dañados un año y medios después del huracán, determinar la abundancia de las especies comerciales, describir cambios en la vegetación (reclutamiento y mortalidad) y analizar la disponibilidad de luz de la regeneración de especies de interés. La metodología que se utilizó para esta investigación se basó en las metodologías propuestas por la unidad de manejo de bosques naturales de CATIE. Para este tipo de estudios. Además se utilizó la metodología de Muestreo Diagnóstico propuesta por Hutchinson (1993), para complementar los datos con un muestreo adicional. El reclutamiento de las seis especies comerciales fue mayor en el bosque intervenido en latizales altos y bajos. La causa de la mortalidad en su mayoría era desconocida, la mortalidad fue mayor y muy parecida en las tres categorías de vegetación en el bosque intervenido. Los latizales altos con una copa más amplia y mejor formados se encontraron en mejores condiciones de luz. Los latizales bajos en general se encontraron en condiciones de poca iluminación. La alta reducción de individuos entre las tres categorías de vegetación estudiadas, la clara relación entre el vigor de los latizales altos (reflejada en la formación de las copas) y la disponibilidad de luz y el alto número de latizales bajos y altos en condiciones de poca iluminación indican el papel potencial de tratamientos silviculturales en este bosque. |

The objective of this study was to characterize the effect of Hurricane Mitch on the dynamics of impacted forests, a year and a half after the disturbance. The study aimed to determine the abundance of natural regeneration of commercial species, describe ongoing changes in this regeneration (recruitment and mortality) and analyze the availability of light to saplings of the species of interest. The methodologies employed were those applied by CATIE's Natural Forest Management Unit. In addition, a diagnostic sampling scheme proposed by Hutchinson (1993) was implemented to complement plot data with additional information.. The process of sapling recruitment of six commercial species was found to be greater in the selectively harvested forests, as opposed to non-harvested forests. The causes of mortality were often impossible to determine. The rate of mortality was greater in the selectively harvested forests, but was found to be less than the number of recruited individuals. Saplings with larger and better formed crowns were found in better light conditions. Small saplings, in general, were found in conditions of poor illumination. The high mortality of seedlings and saplings and the clear relation between sapling vigor and light availability, suggest a potentially important role of silvicultural treatments in these forests. |
