Para mantener biodiversidad en un paisaje amenazado por la fragmentación del bosque es importante comprender el patrón del mosaico del paisaje, porque la manutención de poblaciones de especies y de movimiento de individuos en y entre los parches (diversidad funcional) depende de la composición, configuración espacial y arreglo de los fragmentos de bosque y agroecosistemas en la escala del paisaje. Fueron utilizados fotointerpretación y tecnología de SIG para caracterizar el mosaico de parches de un área protegida (278.38 km2) clave en sistema de áreas protegidas de Nicaragua. El patrón de este paisaje fragmentado fue descrito utilizando parámetros e índices considerados importantes para el manejo y conservación de biodiversidad. Adicionalmente, fue producido un mapa de ambientes del área, considerando clases de elevación, tipos de paisaje y proximidad a ríos. El porcentaje de cobertura forestal fue obtenido para cada ambiente en un proceso de análisis gap. Se hicieron tres simulaciones de restauración del paisaje utilizando criterios objetivos para identificar áreas prioritarias para restauración del bosque. Se hicieron estudios detallados utilizando parcelas multi-escala en el paisaje de bosque montano, evaluando la biodiversidad vegetal en 5 tipos de parches: fragmentos de bosque, pasto, pasto con árboles, cafetales bajo bosque y vegetación secundaria. La vegetación leñosa de cada tipo de parche fue descripta, y fueron determinadas diferencias entre su composición, estructura y diversidad. Se discuten las implicaciones de los resultados para el manejo del área protegida y las posibilidades para el desarrollo y la utilización futura de la metodología utilizada. |

In order to maintain biodiversity in a landscape threatened by forest fragmentation it is important to understand the pattern of the landscape mosaic, because the maintenance of populations of species and invididuals movement within and between patches (functional diversity) depends on the composition, spatial configuration and arrangement of forest fragments and agroecosystems at the landscape scale. Photointerpretation and GIS technology were used to characterise the patch mosaic of a key protected area (278.38 km2) in Nicaragua. The pattern of this fragmented landscape was described using landscape parameters and indexes considered important for the management and conservation of biodiversity. In addition, a map of environments for the area was produced, considering classes of elevation, landscape types and proximity to rivers. The percentage of forest cover was obtained for each potential environment as in a gap analysis process. Three simulations of landscape restoration were carried out using objective criteria to identify priority areas for forest restoration. Detailed studies using multi-scale plots were carried out in the montane forest landscape, evaluating plant biodiversity in each of five patch types: forest fragments, pasture, pasture with trees, coffee plantations under forest and secondary vegetation. The woody vegetation of each patch type was described, and differences between their composition, structure and diversity were determined. The implications of the results for the management of the protected area and the possibilities for further use and development of the methodology used are discussed. |
