Summary, etc	El laurel (Cordia alliodora) y el cedro amargo (Cedrela odorata) son los principales árboles maderables de los cacaotales (C) y bananales (B) de los indígenas Bribri y Cabécar de Talamanca, Costa Rica. En este estudio se determinó la sostenibilidad del aprovechamiento del laurel y se caracterizó a la población del cedro amargo en estos sistemas agroforestales. En el 2001 se realizó un inventario en 68 plantaciones de cacao y banano, se midió el d mayor igual 5 cm de todos los árboles de las dos especies y se calificó la forma del fuste y estado fitosanitario. El rendimiento en volumen comercial (d mayor igual 45 cm) del laurel se proyectó para cada plantación utilizando un modelo de matrices de transición tipo Usher, el modelo emplea información de crecimiento diamétrico y supervivencia. El crecimiento diamétrico se estimó de mediciones de los anillos de crecimiento anual de discos basales, obtenidos de árboles aprovechados en dos condiciones de crecimiento: valle y ladera. Por lo tanto el aprovechamiento de la madera del laurel en los cacaotales y bananales de indígenas de Talamanca es sostenible. Se recomienda la validación del modelo y en su caso la calibración.

Summary, etc	Cordia alliodora and Cedrela odorata are the main timber trees found in cocoa (C) and banana (B) plantations in the Bribrí and Cabécar indigenous communities in Talamanca, Costa Rica. This study was aimed to determine sustainability of C. alliodora utilization and to characterize C. odorata populations under these agroforestry systems. In the year 2001, an inventory was carried out in 68 cocoa and banana plantations, when d greater than 5 cm in all trees of both species was measured and stem form and plant sanitary conditions were evaluated. Yield in commercial volume (d greater than 45 cm) of C. alliodora was estimated for each plantation using a transition matrix model, Usher type. The model uses information on diametric growth and survival. Diametric growth was estimated based on measurements of annual growing rings of the basal disks, obtained from utilized trees under two growing conditions: valley and hillside. Thus, C. alliodora timber utilization in cocoa and banana plantations in indigenous communities in Talamanca is sustainable. Model validation, and calibration if necessary, is recommended.
