Con el propósito de evaluar el efecto de la diversidad de plantas en los agroecosistemas como estrategia para el control de insectos plagas, en este ensayo se revisan los estudios experimentales sobre el tema publicados desde 1998 hasta 2003 en CAB Internacional y se analizan los casos con resultados opuestos a los esperados de mayor regulación de insectos plagas en agroecosistemas más diversificados. El 30 por ciento de los trabajos seleccionados no apoya el principio agroecológico, lo cual puede explicarse por tres factores: 1) diferencias en los mecanismos de historia de vida de los insectos |

Finalmente, se concluye que aunque la diversidad de plantas en los agroecosistemas generalmente es una estrategia adecuada para el control de insectos plagas, no debe ser asumida como un postulado inequívoco, debido a la influencia simultánea de diferentes procesos que afectan las poblaciones de insectos. Esta evidencia experimental debe ser incorporada en los análisis sobre el funcionamiento de los agroecosistemas diversificados. |
