La presente investigación se realizó en la cuenca del río Sixaola en Costa Rica con el objetivo de diseñar y validar una guía metodológica integral para la evaluación del estado de los sistemas de producción agropecuarios y la promoción de sistemas diversificados como mecanismos de adaptación al cambio climático. El marco conceptual sobre el cual se trabajó contempla los enfoques dados para el manejo y gestión de cuencas hidrográficas (MGICH), el desarrollo humano sostenible y la adaptación al cambio climático, siendo el elemento clave la seguridad alimentaria como resultado de un servicio de provisión de los sistemas de producción agropecuaria; los análisis se realizaron a nivel de finca (n=44), a nivel de comunidad y a nivel de cuenca hidrográfica. Los resultados obtenidos se encuentran detallados en cuatro capítulos. El primer capítulo se presenta a manera de estudio de caso y caracteriza los medios y estrategias de vida locales encaminados a la satisfacción de necesidades fundamentales básicas, particularmente la de la alimentación, y describe las condiciones de vulnerabilidad que modifican el desarrollo de éstas. El segundo y tercer capítulo se presentan a manera de artículos (I y II) y son complementarios entre sí; los resultados obtenidos en ambos constituyen los insumos para la generación de la propuesta metodológica desarrollada en el cuarto capítulo (artículo III); en este capítulo final se detallan las variables e indicadores que posibilitaron la realización de análisis, los instrumentos recomendados para la toma de datos en campo, y los procesos llevados a cabo, así como los resultados de la aplicación de la metodología. Las conclusiones constituyen lecciones aprendidas acerca de las condiciones que posibilitan a las familias la adopción de sistemas diversificados de producción agropecuaria y los aspectos que requieren ser profundizados al momento de la aplicación de la propuesta metodológica, así como los factores que posibilitan o limitan su aplicación en campo. Se incluye como parte del capítulo final consideraciones encaminadas a la incorporación de los enfoques para el manejo y gestión de cuencas hidrográficas con el fin de que la promoción de los sistemas diversificados se lleve a cabo de manera integral dentro de un proceso de escalamiento horizontal y vertical, y no de manera aislada; se espera que los resultados obtenidos sean un aporte para la generación de alternativas de manejo a nivel de cuenca, enfocadas al mantenimiento de las funciones ecosistémicas de provisión y el desarrollo sostenible de las comunidades. |

This research was conducted in the Sixaola River basin in Costa Rica, in order to design and validate a comprehensive methodological guide for the evaluation of the state of agricultural production systems and the promotion of diversified systems as mechanisms of adaptation to climate change . The conceptual framework includes approaches for management and watershed management (MGICH), sustainable human development and adaptation to climate change, being the key food security as a result of service provision agricultural production systems, for this, it was considered as units of analysis of farm households surveyed (n = 44). The results are detailed in four chapters. The first chapter presents a case study way and characterizes the media and local livelihood strategies aimed at satisfying basic fundamental needs, particularly of food, and describes the vulnerability that modify their development. The second and third chapters are presented by way of articles (I and II) and are complementary to each other, the results of both are the inputs for the generation of the methodology developed in the fourth chapter (Article III), in this chapter details the variables and indicators that enabled the analysis, the recommended instruments for data collection in the field, and the processes carried out and the results of the application of the methodology. The conclusions are lessons learned about the conditions that enable families adopting diversified farming systems and aspects that need to be deepened at the time of application of the proposed methodology, and the factors that enable or limit its application in field. Included as part of the final chapter aimed at incorporating considerations of management approaches and watershed management in order to promote diversified systems is carried out comprehensively in a process of horizontal and vertical scaling and not in isolation, it is expected that the results are a contribution to the generation of alternative management at basin level focused on maintaining ecosystem functions of provision and sustainable community development. |
