El 25% del territorio del Corredor Biológico Volcánica Central Talamanca (CBVCT) está destinado a la ganadería de leche, carne y doble propósito. Los sistemas silvopastoriles (SSP) predominantes en este uso de suelo son las cercas vivas (CV) y árboles dispersos en potreros (AD), los cuales ayudan a incrementar la rentabilidad de las fincas y proporcionan servicios ambientales (conservación de la fauna local, regulación y calidad del agua y el secuestro de carbono) y ecológicos (disminución de la degradación de las pasturas). El objetivo del presente estudio fue identificar el estado del componente arbóreo y las especies dominantes en CV y AD y su potencial de secuestro de carbono. Para este fin se caracterizó por medio de encuestas e identificación visual en campo el componente arbóreo presente en CV y AD en 108 fincas ganaderas del CBVCT: carne (35), leche (38) y doble propósito (35). Para calcular el potencial de secuestro de carbono se utilizaron imágenes satelitales y el mapa de uso de suelo actual, diferenciando dos rangos altitudinales (<700 msnm y >700 msnm) en los que se calcularon los kilómetros de cercas vivas y muertas y las hectáreas de pasturas sin árboles y con baja densidad arbórea (<30 árboles/ha). Posteriormente, se realizaron las estimaciones de carbono en cuatro escenarios que difieren respecto de la cobertura arbórea: i) actual, ii) potencial moderado, iii) potencial conservacionista y iv) proyección año 2030. El 54% de los encuestados manifestó que la densidad arbórea en las fincas ha aumentado en los últimos 10 años, el 29% que se mantiene y el 16% que ha disminuido. Las fincas con sistema de producción de carne y doble propósito tienen mayor cobertura arbórea y diversificación de sus sistemas silvopastoriles, además realizan un mayor aprovechamiento de madera, postes, frutos y forraje. En contraste, las fincas bajo el sistema de producción de leche tienen menor cobertura arbórea y realizan un menor aprovechamiento de los mismos materiales y productos. Las CV multiestratos presentaron mayores cantidades de carbono almacenado (5,2 ± 0,73 tC), seguido por las pasturas arboladas menores a 700 msnm (4,9 ± 0,13 tC), pasturas arboladas mayores a 700 msnm (3,53 ± 0,13 tC) y finalmente las CV simples (2,41 ± 0,47 tC). Se concluye que el CBVCT tiene un alto potencial para aumentar el stock de carbono incrementando la cobertura arbórea en paisajes ganaderos, en especial en fincas bajo el sistema de producción de carne y doble propósito en donde los productores son más receptivos a incrementar la cobertura arbórea. |

The 25% of territory in the Volcanica Central - Talamanca Biological Corridor (VCTBC) is used for dairy cattle, beef and dual purpose. Silvopastoral systems (SSP) prevailing in this land use are live fences (CV) and scattered trees in paddocks (AD), which help increase farm profitability and provide environmental (local wildlife conservation, regulation and water quality and carbon sequestration) and ecological services (reduction in pasture degradation). The goal of this study was to identify the state of the tree component, the dominant species in CV and AD, and their carbon sequestration potential. The tree component present in AD and CV characterized by means of visual identification and surveys in 108 farms of the VCTBC: meat (35) milk (38) and dual-purpose (35). To calculate the carbon sequestration potential we used satellite images and a map of current land use, distinguishing between two altitudinal ranges (<700 m and > 700 m) in which we calculated the km of live and dead fences plus the area of pastures without trees and with low tree density (<30 trees / ha). Carbon estimates were also assessed under four tree cover scenarios: i) current, ii) moderate potential, iii) conservation potential, and iv) 2030 projection. A 54% of interviewees declared tree density in farms has increased in the last 10 years, while 29% consider it has remained stable, and 16% that it has decreased. Farms with beef production and dual purpose systems have more tree cover and diverse silvopastoral systems. They also make better use of wood, fence posts, fruits and fodder. In contrast, milk farms have lower tree cover and make less use of those same products and materials. Live fences showed higher amounts of carbon storage (5,2 ± 0,73 tC), followed by wooded pastures under 700 m in elevation (4,9 ± 0,13 tC), wooded pastures over 700 m in elevation (3,53 ± 0,13 tC), and simple live fences (2,41 ± 0,47 tC). We conclude their is a high potential to increase the carbon stock in the VCTBC by increasing tree cover in cattle landscapes, especially on farms under meat and dual purpose production systems, where farmers are more receptive to increasing tree cover. |
