El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar el papel de la agrobiodiversidad en cuanto a sus aportes a la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional, y así mismo, en torno a sus aportes en la adaptación al cambio climático, lo anterior, identificando el potencial y estrategias de las comunidades El Campamento y La Pampa, pertenecientes al municipio de Acatenango, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Las comunidades fueron seleccionadas de acuerdo a sus características ambientales y su ubicación en diferentes zonas de vida, además de una ser considerada periurbana y la otra rural. En cuanto a la muestra y metodología del estudio, se trabajó con 15 especialistas locales (10 en El Campamento y 5 en La Pampa), para obtener información sobre la agrobiodiversidad, conocimientos y prácticas asociadas, situación de la seguridad alimentaria y caracterización de los capitales de las comunidades, se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas. Para triangular la información fueron realizados dos grupos focales por comunidad, las familias con las que se trabajó fueron las mismas que asisten a los CADER, además también se realizaron visitas guiadas, observación participante y recopilación de información secundaria. Fue utilizada la base de datos de Worldclim para obtener información de los escenarios climáticos futuros. También se realizó un taller final de validación de la información y definición de líneas estratégicas para promover la seguridad alimentaria, la conservación de la agrobiodiversidad y la adaptación al cambio climático. Los resultados mostraron que para la comunidad de El Campamento se cuenta con un mosaico de diferentes agroecosistemas compuesto por 83 especies/variedades de plantas cultivadas/nativas, y para la comunidad de la Pampa se cuenta con 70 especies/variedades de plantas cultivadas/ nativas. Se conocieron las prácticas tradicionales asociadas a la agricultura y al manejo de los recursos naturales. La agricultura es básicamente para autoconsumo. En la comunidad El Campamento hay mayor diversidad de producción, así como de productos excedentes para comercializar, mientras que en La Pampa, la mayor parte de la producción es de café, que contribuye a generar ingresos y comprar los alimentos necesarios. Los y las productoras han percibido que sus prácticas han sido afectadas por los cambios en el clima, por ejemplo, la sequía prolongada ha disminuido la producción y por lo tanto la oferta de alimentos para autoconsumo y para comercialización, lo cual reduce a su vez la disponibilidad de alimentos y de ingresos, al mismo tiempo que aumenta los gastos. Las proyecciones indican un aumento de temperatura y una reducción de la precipitación pluvial en la región, afectando las condiciones para seis especies de plantas cultivadas en La Pampa y dos en El Campamento. La agrobiodiversidad será impactada por los cambios climáticos que van provocar la reducción de especies y agroecosistemas, sin embargo, será esencial enfrentar estos impactos causados por el calentamiento y sequía. Los parientes silvestres de las plantas cultivadas presentan alta variabilidad genética, y son fuente de genes para el desarrollo de nuevas variedades, adaptables a las condiciones ambientales adversas. The objective of the present study is to analyze the roles of agro-biodiversity, contributions to food security and nutrition, and climate change adaptation, while identifying the potential strategies of the communities of El Campamento and La Pampa, in Acatenango, Guatemala. These communities were selected primarily according to environmental characteristics (being located in different life zones and one being considered peri-urban and the other rural). The methodology and sampling design involved working with 15 local specialists (10 in the El Campamento and 5 in La Pampa) to learn practices associated with agrobiodiversity, status of food security and characterization of capital communities, using semi-structured interviews. To triangulate the information, two focus groups with families participating in the CADER were conducted in each community, in addition to guided tours, participant observation, and secondary data collection. Future climate scenarios were sourced in the Worldclim. A final validation workshop was conducted to gain information, and to define strategies to promote the areas of food security, agro-biodiversity conservation, and adaptation to climate change. An analysis of results showed a mosaic of differing agroecosystems making up the landscape of El Campamento, including 83 species / varieties of native plants, with 70 species in La Pampa. Participants understood traditional traditional agricultural practices and natural resources management. Their agriculture is basically of a subsistence variety. The community of El Campamento has more diversity of production and surplus products to sell, while in La Pampa, most of the production is coffee, which helps them to generate income for necessary food purchases. Both the consumers and producers are starting to be affected by changes in climate; the prolonged drought has reduced production, and consequently the supply of available consumption and surplus food goods, while increasing costs. The regional forecast is for increased temperature and reduced rainfall, affecting the conditions for six species of plants grown in La Pampa and two in El Campamento. Agricultural biodiversity will be impacted by climate change, which will result in the reduction of agro-ecosystems and species, nevertheless, it will be essential to confront and adapt to the impacts of warming and drought. Wild relatives of cultivated plants have high genetic variability, and are sources of genes for developing new varieties adapted to adverse environmental conditions. |
