La presente investigación tuvo como finalidad principal determinar los factores que influyen en el proceso de adopción de prácticas agroforestales implementadas por instituciones y proyectos en cuatro comunidades de este municipio. Se utilizaron métodos de investigación sociológica como: encuestas, talleres, observaciones de campo, transectos y mapas. Además se hicieron mediciones para verificar si el grado de desarrollo de los árboles satisfacía las expectativas de los productores en cuanto a los beneficios que se pueden obtener de los mismos. Se utilizó interpretación descriptiva de las variables cualitativas y análisis estadístico para variables cuantitativas, con pruebas de Chi-cuadrado. Los principales resultados de la investigación indican que los agricultores adoptaron y adaptaron las prácticas agroforestales principalmente por: necesidad de leña, consumo y venta de madera así como beneficios ambientales. Se identificaron algunos factores que incidieron en el proceso, entre ellos están: incentivos, asistencia técnica, tenencia de la tierra, beneficios de los árboles, cambios de actitud y tamaño de la finca. La principal adaptación identificada fue el cambio del espaciamiento de los árboles para dar oportunidad de continuar con las siembras de los cultivos anuales. En el proceso de implementación de prácticas se produjo un intercambio de conocimientos que hizo posible la multiplicación de las mismas entre los agricultores del entorno. Sin embargo, este proceso todavía es muy incipiente. Es importante continuar con el establecimiento de prácticas agroforestales en el municipio de San Juan Opico, principalmente a partir de resultados que a la fecha visualizan los agricultores. Sin embargo, se necesita una política de estímulos como la entrega de insumos estratégicos (bolsas, semillas, asistencia técnica), combinado con cursos de capacitación que ayuden a mejorar las técnicas de manejo de las plantaciones. |

This research was carried out in order to determine factors that have influenced farmer adoption of agroforestry practices, promoted by institutions and projects in four communitites in San Juan Opico. Several sociological research methodologies were utilized including interviews, workshops, transects, community mapping and field observations with farmers. Plots were measured to quantify tree productivity to determine to what degree, agroforestry plantings are meeting farmers' expectations. Descriptive interpretations were made of qualitative variables, while statistical analyses (Chi-Square) were used for some quantitative variables. Results indicate that farmers adopt and adapt agroforestry practices in an effort to generate fuelwood, wood for local use and for sale and for environmental benefits. Incentives, land tenure, promising tree development, attitude changes (with regards to tree planting) and farm size were found to be important factors in the adoption of agroforestry practices. Increases in tree spacing were the principal modification observed in adopted practices. According to farmers, this adaptation was carried out in order to increase light to associated annual crops and maintain grain yields. An active sharing of knowledge among farmers was observed, which has led, in an incipient manner, to a multiplier effect in agroforestry practice adoption. The establishment and management of agroforestry practices in San Juan Opico should continue, taking full advantage of the results obtained thusfar by participating farmers. Strategic inputs (as part of a modest incentive package) such as bags for tree seedlings, seeds, training courses and technical assistance are vital in order to maintain reforestation activities and improve tree productivity over time in the municipality. |
