Este estudio traza la historia del uso de la tierra en el estado de Campeche con el propósito de identificar los impulsores de deforestación de impacto directo e indirecto en paisajes ganaderos de los municipios de Calakmul, Escárcega y Champotón. Se utilizó una revisión de literatura y entrevistas semiestructuradas con informantes claves, incluyendo productores ganaderos, autoridades locales, funcionarios del gobierno, investigadores y actores de organizaciones no gubernamentales (ONG) para triangular las respuestas sobre los impulsores de cambio de uso de suelo la historia estos cambios, con respecto a la deforestación. Además, se utilizaron sistemas de información geográfica (SIG) para analizar los cambios de uso de suelo y vegetación entre el periodo 2001-2013. A nivel de impulsores indirectos; las políticas públicas agropecuarias e inmigración por colonos mexicanos crearon condiciones para el cambio de tenencia y los cambios hacia actividades agropecuarias asociadas con la deforestación. Si bien la revisión de estudios anteriores apunta hacia la importancia de subsidios agropecuarios como detonantes de la deforestación, las entrevistas revelaron que estos apoyos no son reconocidos como significativos en la expansión de la superficie ganadera por los mismos productores o los funcionarios públicos. Entre los impulsores directos, los entrevistados apuntaron-en orden de importancia- la ganadería, la agricultura mecanizada, la explotación forestal (tanto de madera como carbón vegetal) como actividades que promueven directamente la deforestación. En particular, la vegetación secundaria es la frontera de expansión. La expansión de la actividad ganadera se refleja en la transformación de áreas con vegetación secundaria en áreas de pasturas cultivadas. Además, el análisis SIG sugiere que la expansión de pastizales actualmente continua principalmente en áreas de vegetación secundaria, aunque se nota a su vez el efecto del abandono de tierras, donde se recupera la vegetación secundaria. |

This study traces the land use history in Campeche, Mexico to identify the direct and indirect drivers of deforestation and land use change in cattle ranching landscapes in the municipalities of Calakmul, Escárcega and Champotón. A literature review and semistructured interviews with key informants, including cattle farmers, local authorities, government officials, researchers and non-governmental organization actors were used to triangulate the responses about drivers of land use change with respect to deforestation. In addition, geographic information systems (GIS) were used to analyze changes in land use and vegetation between 2001-2013. Regarding indirect drivers; agricultural policies and rural immigration by Mexican settlers have led to changes in land tenure and agricultural activities associated with deforestation. Although previous studies point to the importance of agricultural subsidies as triggers of deforestation, interviews revealed that this economic support is not recognized as a significant factor in pasture expansion, in the view of cattle ranchers and public officials. Among the direct drivers, the interviewees suggested-in order of importance-cattle ranching, mechanized agriculture, and forestry (for wood and charcoal) as the activities that directly promote deforestation. Importantly, the secondary vegetation in cattle ranching landscapes is the frontier of this deforestation. Expansion of livestock activities is reflected in the transformation of areas with secondary vegetation in cultivated pastures. In addition, the GIS analysis suggests that the expansion of pastures continues in areas of secondary vegetation, although the effect of the abandonment of land, and the recovery of secondary vegetation in other areas is also noted. |
