Lpodoptera frugiperda, plaga conocida comúnmente como gusano cogollero del maíz ataca muchos cultivos (maíz, sorgo, arroz, caña de azúcar) así como pastos naturales y cultivados de los trópicos y subtrópicos de América. Sin embargo esta plaga se destaca por su ataque al maíz en el estado posterior a la germinación (cogollo). Para el control del gusano cogollero se ha utilizado pesticidas, los cuales no han dado los resultados esperados y presenta como deseable la utilización del método de control biológico. Indica que, el Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control (CIBC) posee mucha experiencia en este campo ya que ha estado activamente comprometido en el manejo integrado de plagas en Trinidad desde 1976.
