Por adaptarse a diversidad de suelos, presentar buena capacidad de instalación, productividad y persistencia sin riesgos de meteorismo para el ganado vacuno, el Lotus está ampliamente difundido en Uruguay como leguminosa mejorada de pasturas naturales, como cultivo puro o como componente de pasturas cultivadas que integran esquemas forrajeros en sistemas mejorados de producción. El manejo de la defoliación incide marcadamente en la productividad y la persistencia de esta leguminosa. Se presenta información numérica y analítica obtenida de un experimento de pastoreo con corderos y en un registro de pastoreo con novillos, en la EEA La Estanzuela. El experimento consistió en la evaluación de un cultivo de Lotus de primer año, con trébol blanco como impureza, bajo tres manejos de pastoreo, durante el período crítico de 150 días de verano-otoño. Se concluyó que el Lotus permite obtener elevados rendimientos de forraje de buena calidad; que es posible alcanzar muy buen comportamiento animal, aún en altas dotaciones, sobre pasturas de esta leguminosa, lo que resulta en una elevada productividad por hectárea y finalmente que, sí bien en períodos cortos tolera el pastoreo continúo relativamente severo, su persistencia y comportamiento general se ven favorecidos por una alternancia de defoliaciones y descansos.
