Summary, etc	La familia Scolytidae incluye especies conocidas comúnmente como descortezadores o ambroziales. El nombre se debe a la acción de las especies más agresivas del grupo y que presentan estos hábitos alimenticios, como es el caso de especies de los géneros: Dendroctonus, Scolytus, Conopthorus, Hylesinus e Ips en las regiones templadas, o los géneros Xyleborus, Xylosandrus e Hypothenemus en las regiones tropicales. Señala algunos aspectos generales sobre esta familia de coleópteros, tales como: hábitos alimenticios, distribución, reproducción, ciclos biológicos y capacidad de dispersión. Describe algunas características sobre el género Hypothenemus, destacando la especie Hypothenemus hampei que ataca únicamente a Coffea arabica y por ser la especie más importante económicamente dentro del género. Señala otras especies de interés tales como H. eruditus, H. seriatus, H. obscurus e H. columbi. Indica la necesidad de control de las plagas de la familia Scolytidae en las regiones tropicales por lo que enumera una serie de factores que se deben considerar para el manejo integrado de estas plagas.
