Summary, etc	Presenta el informe final sobre los resultados obtenidos en el marco del Proyecto USDA/OICD/IICA: métodos alternativos al uso de dibromuro de etileno (EDB) en el tratamiento postcosecha de frutas tropicales: mangos y papayas. El EDB es el agente más idóneo, económico y de sencilla aplicación hasta ahora conocido para dar tratamiento de postcosecha a las frutas tropicales, en cuanto al control de las moscas de la fruta, específicamente la Moscamed: Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) y algunas especies del género Anastrepha. Debido a las restricciones cuarentenarias de los Estados Unidos y la prohibición del uso de fumigantes como el EDB, el IICA elaboró una propuesta para realizar en Costa Rica este proyecto de investigación, con los objetivos de determinar el grado de madurez al cual los mangos y las papayas son infestados por las moscas de las frutas, desarrollar métodos para medir con certeza el grado de madurez y desarrollar tratamientos alternativos de postcosecha para estas frutas, que puedan ser usados también para otras frutas tropicales. Entre los métodos alternativos a investigar se recomendó la aplicación de tratamientos con agua caliente o una combinación de ésta con un fumigante. El proyecto se desarrolló en tres fases experimentales y los resultados que se presentan se dan como una primera aproximación a la solución de los problemas que se plantearon en el marco del proyecto.
