En el Uruguay, en condiciones normales, los insectos no son un factor limitante para el desarrollo del cultivo del maíz. Cuando están presentes, producen pérdidas de diferente magnitud, dependiendo de la intensidad del ataque y de sus condiciones ambientales. Teniendo en cuenta el lugar donde desarrollan su ciclo o la parte de la planta que dañan, se dividen en tres grandes grupos: 1) insectos del suelo: Agrotis ipsilon, Elasmopalpus lignosellus, y Diloboderus abderus; 2) insectos de hoja y espiga: Spodoptera frugiperda, Heliothis zea, Diabrotica speciosa, Rhopalosiphum maidis; y 3) insectos barrenadores del tallo: Diatraea saccharallis. Finalmente, destaca que en el Uruguay, para todas las especies mencionadas anteriormente, normalmente no se realiza control químico, debido fundamentalmente a dos causas: bajos niveles de población registrados; y relación insumo-producto muy alto.
