Enumera las causas fundamentales y responsables que afectan la producción de coco en Panamá. Presenta algunos conceptos sobre la naturaleza de las plagas en los cultivos y hace una clasificación general de éstas de acuerdo a su conducta en el campo: plagas constantes; de irrupción; de bajo nivel, intermitentes o auxiliares; y plagas vectores. Explica en que consiste el manejo integrado de plagas como método de control, señalando las medidas culturales y biológicas que se integran con este método. Presenta algunas generalidades sobre el cultivo del coco (Cocos nucifera), para luego describir las diversas plagas del cocotero y las medidas de control que se deben utilizar. Estas plagas son: 1) picudo del cocotero (Rhynchophorum palmarum); 2) cocorrón o escarabajo rinoceronte (Strataegus sp); 3) gusano cortador de las hojas (Brassolis isthmia); 4) escamas (Aspidiotus destructor); 5) chicharrita homotera: Cixidae: vector que provoca el amarillamiento letal del cocotero.
