Summary, etc The Ministry of Food Production, Marine Exploitation, Forestry and the Environment provides farmers with subsidized seed material of two hot pepper varieties. These are the local yellow and red types. Over the years the bulking of these two varieties have resulted in genetic deterioration. These two varieties ought to be purified through selection and isolation. However, farmers should be given the opportunity to an alternative source of hot pepper. Accordingly, the Vegetable Section at Central Experiment Station, Centeno, embarked on breeding a range of sweet and hot peppers of local adaptability. The objective for breeding and selecting hot peppers was to incorporate a thick flesh cultivar into a chilli type (hot). This would offer a hot pepper with a thick flesh for processing pepper sauce. Another objective was to select a fruit with a uniform size (conical or bell) free from ridges with convex shoulder and a round to tapering end. This kind of fruit would be of excellent post harvest quality, particulary at storage and transportation
