This second phase of the Wakapoa Coffee Rehabilitation Project has been largely successful in realising the objetives set out in the project document. The objetive of this second phase was to increase the production and improve the quality of Liberica coffee processed and marketed in the Lower Pomerron Communities. The project has had a positive economic impact on farmers and residents of Wakapoa and neighbouring communities who have found a ready market for their coffee berries at the Wakapoa Association's facilities. By roasting, griding, packaging and wholesaling and retailing of final ground coffee, the project has been instrumental in adding value and creating 10 jobs for local women. Farmers have been motivated to improve their coffee holdings since they now have ready markets and are paid reasonable prices for their berries. The strategy for recruiting, training and employing Community Transfer Agents (CCTAs) to conduct training and other activities of the project was one of the successes of this phase. The Committee of Management of the WCPA has demonstrated greater competence in managing the affairs of the Association. With assistance from the Village Council and from IICA and other technical agencies, they have grown in confidence |
