Consolidando el diálogo hemisférico y el desarrollo de una agenda regional de innovación tecnológica para el sector agropecuario, el Foro de las Américas para la Investigación y Desarrollo Tecnológico Agropecuario realizó entre el 28 y el 30 de julio del 2008 la V Reunión Internacional de FORAGRO Montevideo 2008. Con el lema “Innovaciones Institucionales para una agricultura con conocimiento en las Américas para el Siglo XXI”, la reunión contó con la participación de los diferentes representantes de los grupos de interés que componen FORAGRO, o sea, institutos nacionales y regionales de investigación agropecuaria, organizaciones de productores, organismos no gubernamentales, universidades, instituciones del sistema de investigación agropecuaria internacional y del sector privado. En total hubo más de 200 participantes de 32 países de dentro y fuera de las Américas que participaron en el diálogo dirigido hacia el fortalecimiento de una agenda conjunta en innovación e investigación agropecuaria en la región. “Esta es una oportunidad importante y única para la región”, declaró Mario Allegri, Presidente del FORAGRO, “porque nos permite una interacción entre los diferentes agentes vinculados con la innovación e investigación agropecuaria y nos permite llegar a acuerdos y consensos a nivel regional y estrechar nuestros vínculos con el sistema global de investigación”. La reunión fue organizada en forma conjunta entre el Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria (INIA) de Uruguay y el IICA por medio del Área de Tecnología e Innovación y la oficina en Uruguay. Contó con el apoyo de los PROCI, el FONTAGRO, el CGIAR, el Banco Mundial, el SEGIB y prestigiosas instituciones vinculadas con la agricultura de Uruguay.
