Tipo de material: ArtículoArtículoSeries Reports, Results and Recommendations from Technical Events Series A2/LC (IICA) no. 89-04. Editor: Castries (Santa Lucía) 1989Descripción: p. 25-26.ISSN: 0253-4746.Tema(s): DIOSCOREA | PEQUENO AGRICULTOR | EXPORTACIONES | CULTIVO | VARIEDADES | GRANADAResumen: The document presents the most popular varieties of yam: White Lsibon, Moonshine and Wild Yam (in the Dioscorea alata group); Yellow Yam (D. cayenensis); and Cush-such (D. trifida). The two most serious problems are pests (Nematodes) and diseases (Anthracnose). Other constraints are the lack of small mechanical ploughing equipment adopted to hillsides and small plots to lower the high cost of land preparation and insufficient dissemination of realiable crop economic data. Poor harvesting techniques also lead to considerable losses; there also non-technological constraints which limit yam production in Grenada. Finally, the document presents the necessity of a yam development project for the following areas: the introduction and multiplication of high yielding disease resistan varieties with good consumer acceptance; and, adequate training of farmers and extension agents, among others.
