Some comparisons with the mechanism of infection of legumes by rhizobia were made. The N-fixing cyanobacteria were considered from the points of view of isolation, characterization of species and matabolism, and the role of Anabaena spp. in the Azolla-Anabaena symbiosis. The agronomic importance of the Azolla-Anabaena association in wetland rice production was discussed. (MIBA)
