The document argues that livestock systems can plan an important role in the development of more sustainable land-use systems. It is organized as follows: first, the concept of a sustainable land-use system is defined; examples of different constraints to sustainability are identified; the potential role of livestock technology to ameliorate sustainability constraints is discussed; and finally, the potential contribution of livestock systems to the development of sustainable land-use systems is analyzed
