Agriculture has always been difficult and the issues which emerge within the context of trade and adjusment are among the most sensitive for policy-makers and other stakeholders. Globalisation, including the liberalisation of tradem have become keyy issues in the 1990's. The Goverment of Grenada recognises that the bedrock of the world trading systm and that of the World Trade Organisation must be the liberalisation of trade. However, just as the sugar industry in Europe require time to adjust to the forces of competition, so too do the industries in small countries. That is why Grenada views the 1997 WTO decision on the European Union banana regime to be an unjust one. (MV)
