The strategy of the Government of Barbados wants to give the role assigned to agriculture, in the sense to support and revitalize the leading sector, tourism. The main objectives are to primate the optimal utilization of the land; enable the sector to meet a greater share of domestic demand for food; ensure that the sector forms the basis of a Barbados agro-industry; increase the volume of no-sugar produce exported; and promote the rationalization of the sugar sub-sector. IICA has been playing an active role in support of the diversification efforts. Main areas of concentration have been support to tropical fruit production, planning and information systems and marketing. The strategy for the period includes fruit crop development; planning and policy analysis; farm management; agricultural census; and ad-hoc activities. (MIBA)
