The paper is developed below as outlined. Section 2 looks quite briefly at the historical evolution, basic principles and configuration of the European Community. Section 3, then, addresses the role of agriculture within the EEC; the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is described and agricultural development over the lifetime of the CAP is discussed. Section 4 looks at some of the key issues raised by the CAP. Section 5 considers the proposed European unification and spectulates briefly about possible consequences for Caribbean agriculture.
