Por: Quartey Papafio, E | Cocoa Research Institute, Tafo (Ghana) | (3 : International Cocoa Research Conference (3 : 1971 : Lagos, Nigeria).
Editor: Lagos (Nigeria): COPAL, 1971Descripción: 4 páginas.Otro título: Apercu sur la régénération et la diversification du cacao | Revista rápida da recuperação e diversificação do cacau.Tema(s): THEOBROMA CACAO | REHABILITACION DE TIERRAS | PLANTACIONES | DIVERSIFICACION | CONTROL DE PLAGAS | CONTROL DE ENFERMEDADES | THEOBROMA CACAO | RECLAMATION | PLANTATIONS | DIVERSIFICATION | PEST CONTROL | DISEASE CONTROLResumen: Of the various controllable factors which adversely affect the yield of cocoa, none are probably more important than the standard of maintenance, and senility. To improve the yield of neglected or poorly managed farms, rehabilitation is undertaken. This involves the control of pests and diseases, the filling of vacancies, and the provision of improved management. When farms are poor yielding due to senility or loss of a substantial portion of the trees, it would seem more advantageous to replant the whole farm, adopting such system as would ensure the minimum financial upset to the farmer. Apart form new planting, replanting makes better use of new and better varieties that are produced than filling vacancies with them. In countries where there is a marked disproportional dependence on cocoa or where its expansion is now made into marginal areas, diversification away from cocoa might help stabilise the economy, but what will be the replacement crops?
