Sufficient has been written here to illustrate and inform readers of the applications of the principles of plant and animal sciences to the improvement and maintenance of grazing systems, and to the production of animals from them. In addition, animal behaviour is discussed, and also problems and possibilities of grazing in deserts, the arctic tundra, public parks, forests and improved tropical pastures. The management of systems, including those based on highly improved pastures in both tropical and cool temperate regions of the world, is considered in detail. Three groups of chapters are presented. The first six, are concerned with the components of grazing systems. The emphasis on the plants that are grazed is important for an understanding of the production of animals. The emphasis on animal behaviour and intake is necessary since these largely determine animal performance. Chapters 7-12 are discussions of the ecology and use of pastures of environments ranging from the arctic to the equator, and from tropical rain forests to deserts. The remaining chapters are concerned with the manipulation and management of resources in systems of animal production from pastures. These range from selection and improvement of pasture plants, the use of fertilizers, drought management, and the role of detrimental substances in plants. A chapter on computer modelling and simulation of grazing systems was included. The final chapter is an attempt to integrate much of the information from preceding chapters, and to suggest ways in which this could be used to develop efficient systems of production. The book is intended not only as a general review of the biology and management of grazing systems, but also as a text for students of agriculture and veterinary science | ||
