520 _aEMBRAPA/CENARGEN has an ongoing plant genetic resources conservation system since 1974. Changes and improvements in the facilities and technologies took place in the meantime. CENARGEN's main business, to keep the germplams in good viable conditions for long term storage, has been achieved. The handling of seed germplasm in a gene bank is not an easy task because of the responsability in taking managerial decisions. The curator is acutely aware of that At present., CENARGEN holds 70,000 accesssions of seed germplasm which account for 373 species and 166 crop plants in cold chambers running at-20¦C. (MCV)
