520 _aThis is an important moment for the private sectors of the Americas because we are about to launch the negotiations on the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), an economic block in the Hemisphere with great potential in the process of opening trade without barriers in the near future. Trade liberalization has proved that, despite the difficulties, mostly caused by the fast pace of the measures adopted and by the lack of understanding of the characteristics of the farm sectors in our countries, the benefits are remarkable. I would like to emphasize the point that the benefits of trade liberalization are greater than the possible losses which the farm sector has endured. (MV)
