| 520 | _aEste documento presenta los conocimientos que hasta la fecha se tienen en América Central, sobre el cultivo de la especie Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maid. Es una especie de la familia MYRTACEAE, nativa del continente australiano, en condiciones de 1000 a 1800 mm de lluvia y temperaturas tropicales a subtropicales. En suelos adecuados es una de las especies forestales de mayor rendimiento. Se le ha plantado ampliamente en muchas partes del mundo tropical; en el Sur de África y América del Sur principalmente y se le ha investigado bastante desde principios del siglo actual. Ha sido mayormente plantada en grandes extensiones, donde hay entre 800 y 2500 mm de precipitación. El Eucalyptus grandis es una de las especies forestales más exigentes, requiere de sitios con suelos de textura suelta y libre de compactación por el uso agrícola o ganadero. Miles de hectáreas plantadas con eucalipto en los últimos años, presentan un potencial productivo muy inferior a lo que la especie puede ofrecer en condiciones adecuadas de suelo y clima. La falta de información suficiente y oportuna, que sirva de base al desarrollo de una reforestación productiva, representa quizá una de las mayores limitantes al desarrollo de proyectos forestales de alta rentabilidad con esta especie. Con la presente guía se espera solventar buena parte de esos problemas, en el sentido de dar a conocer los requerimientos de clima, suelo y cuidados culturales, para que E. grandis permita realizar los objetivos de los proyectos de reforestación. | ||
